I don't know if you're aware of this, but the world is going to end in 2012. (Cue David Bowie's "Five Years" )

Oh, no, I didn't make this up. It's all there in the Mayan long calendar, a remarkable artifact that is actually a complex system of calendars and almanacs dating back at least 2500 years. The origins of it may lie as much as 11,000 years in the past.

It's the oldest calendar in the world, and the only one that has an end date. Incredibly, it doesn't just name a year, but, according to some impressive maths, the day as well.

Yes, folks, the world will end on December 21st 2012.

How does this make you feel? What do you plan to do with your remaining five years?

(It should be noted that the more optimistic of long calendar students are claiming that what will end is "the world as we know it". Certainly, it seems fair to claim that right now we are on the cusp of some major changes in the way the world works. Perhaps what will follow will be better?)
